Éva Nyitrai

Eva

Autobiography

„I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint.” Habakkuk 2:1

My name is Éva Nyitrai. I was born in December 1938 as the third daughter of godly – but not newly born – parents in Hungary. I have two older sisters and a younger brother. At home we were taught to fear God, read the Bible and pray but at that time nobody told us that we needed to receive Jesus Christ or new birth. After World War II week long evangelizations were  held all over the country and a wave of awakening swept over Hungary. At this time the Gospel came to Tiszaföldvár the small town where we lived with my parents. In those days my mother came to living faith in Jesus Christ. My father found the Savior much later. As a 10-12 year old child I heard the message of the Gospel and as the audience was challenged to take a decision for Christ I went with them because I thought if this was the will of the Lord I wanted to obey for this would be best for my life. As to conviction of sin I did not see very clearly in this regard at that time; I knew only I needed Jesus and asked Him to become Lord of my life and took my decision seriously. We even played Bible study with my sister and cousin. I remember well explaining them the Beatitudes but I do not remember any more what I told them about the poor in spirit being blessed.

After the evangelizations there was no follow-up work and many new Christians were left alone as the local pastors were not newly born Christians, only religious. After a while our Christian life suffered the absence of Christian fellowship and good Christian leaders. The daily Bible reading and prayer was not neglected but the fire of the first love disappeared. When in 1960 I came to work to Budapest immediately the contact was made to a Christian church which had a dear Christian pastor Ferenc Sréter (Fank’s father). Before moving to the capital God spoke to me again through Hosea 1:19-20 „I will betroth you to me for ever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion. I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the Lord”.

How wonderful are God’s great love and provision. The Lord renewed me by His love and grace taking away my sins. Throughout my life this verse proved to be real and true. It was His will for me to remain single. Although it meant a struggle again and again that marriage is not His will for me but the Lord was always with me in my struggles. He is faithful.

I worked almost 40 years having two workpaces as logistic leader with a light industrial company which got dissolved after change in 1991. At 53 years of age I was forced to retire. The Lord carried me always graciously in his arms shaping my life and I am confident that He finishes His holy work till the end. At the beginning of my years of retirement I spent 5 years with nursing an old lady a far distant relative. Meanwhile my mother at 80 years of age gave up her home in the country and moved from Tiszaföldvár to me. In October 2000 when she was 86 the Lord took her to His heavenly home.

After a short rest – which I spent with my sister in the U.S.A. (Brookfield, Wisconsin) – I felt the need to serve tho Lord at a place shown by Him. I prayed much to understand His will. At this time Veronika Kiss invited me to help with the work of the literature mission Jó Hír (Good News) and Good Part where I had helped already in 2001. The Lord soon convinced and encouraged me showing that He prepared this place for me.

I accepted the offer gladly and do joyfully the responsibilities entrusted to me. I am grateful to the Lord that He prepared an opportunity for me to serve Him with Good News. „Praise the Lord, o my soul; all my innermost being, praise his holy name.”  Psalm 103:1

The Lord, my wonderful Savior gave me another opportunity to serve Him. I could join the Voluntary Hospital Helpers. We can spend weekly 3 to 5 hours attending patients in the hospital. Our responsibility is mainly counseling, giving spiritual help but if necessary we do other tasks as well. Many times I leave home weary but after 3 to 5 hours of service in the hospital I go home refreshed with much joy in my heart.

I belong to a Free Evangelical Church in Budapest where I am responsible for the treasury.

I need daily the renewing grace of the Lord who gives me everything which is necessary for life and eternity. Let us praise His name for everything.

The Lord encourages me daily through this verse and I keep on going happy every new day.

„The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you” (Deut. 28:8)

In Christ’s love,

Éva Nyitrai
